Sacrifice

Luke 9:23

“23 Then He said to them all, “If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.”

Follow me

What is the true measure of a man? We have all heard this saying from a skewed worldview; however, what does the Bible say about this topic? I can quickly tell you that true sacrifice, taking up your cross daily, and following Jesus Christ is the ONLY measure that matters!

This week, my wife and I are hosting three staffers from “Camp in the City.” This is a day camp, Monday through Friday, where campers experience Jesus through a variety of activities: Bible study, worship time, and other camp activities such as rock climbing all while actively engaging with college students who have sacrificed their entire summer to travel across the country to serve as followers of Jesus Christ.

I would call this true sacrifice!

In our current society, we learn to be selfish and envious of others. What does this look like in our day-to-day lives? “My car isn’t as nice as his.” “My house isn’t as big as hers.” “I wish I had the newest cellphone like my friend.” “I work harder than she does.” You see, we are constantly comparing ourselves – why? Our society teaches us such practices. Yes, my dear friends, this is not Christ-like.

Denying yourself brings true freedom!

It is beyond refreshing to listen to these young adults while they share their passion for leading young children and today’s youth by living like Jesus. As they ponder their future, they know that Jesus is at the center of their decisions. They are the quintessential definition of role-model while here on earth.

We must be full of Jesus and less of ourselves!

Celebration

Revelation 19:9

Then he said to me, “Write, ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb ‘” And he said to me, “These are true words of God.”

Revelation 19-9

Today is a special day! It is my anniversary. Seventeen years ago, my bride said “I do” to an undeserving young man. I knew I was marrying my best friend and gaining someone special for the rest of my life. However, God continues to peal back the layers of this special relationship year after year, and it is richer today than it was seventeen years ago! The source belongs to our Creator God who brought us together many years ago as very young adults in college. As we elevate our worship to the One who united our souls years ago, we continue to grow closer together through Him. So today I say I am still undeserving, but I recognize I am blessed!

As I reminisced over that very hot Louisiana day seventeen years ago, I could not help but think about another celebration – God’s invitation to the great banquet! This marriage supper focuses on the bridegroom – The Lamb Jesus Christ! The bride is the church. What a great honor to be invited to this celebration! Our duty is to share the love of Christ! Mark 16:15 says, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.” Father God has sent out an invitation to His great marriage supper of the Lamb. Who will accept His invitation? Have you? Do not delay! Accept His Son today and you will be seated at this celebration at the coming day! Yes and Amen!

Promises

Genesis 9:12-17

“12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between Me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all future generations: 13 I have placed My bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all the living creatures: water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature. 16 The bow will be in the clouds, and I will look at it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all the living creatures on earth.” 17 God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have confirmed between Me and every creature on earth.”

Rainbow

Yes – this happened today! I stop, stare, and marvel in His promises. You see, there are many in this world who plead, yes beg, for a “sign” from God. Oh my friends, you are looking at it! The first thing that comes to my mind are the words from the hymn “I Stand Amazed in the Presence” – How marvelous! How wonderful! And my song shall ever be: How marvelous! How wonderful! Is my Savior’s love for me!

Even more, I am amazed that God Himself says this is v14, Whenever I form clouds over the earth and the bow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember My covenant between Me and you and all the living creatures: water will never again become a flood to destroy every creature.” God not only keeps His promises (always) but He never forgets! God Himself, the Creator, made a personal statement to His creation by saying “I will remember...” How does this resonate with you? For me, I see Father God looking down with love at the sight of every rainbow all across the world saying, “Look at what I’ve done for YOU!” Yet, are you too busy to even notice? The God of all creation is having an open dialogue by this visible sign; however, many fail to even look up and acknowledge its existence.

We are increasingly losing our focus on God in this sinful world. The enemy has masterfully orchestrated distractions to lure you away from the Creator. What are your distractions? I encourage you all to bask in His presence the next time you witness the miracle of a rainbow – yes miracle. God placed this sign in the sky as a covenant with all living creatures; I would call that a miracle my friends!

I beg you not to miss the “rainbows” in your life. God is constantly speaking; however, are you listening, watching, seeking?

Stop! Take a breath! Look up! He’s speaking to you AND the whole world!

I am forever grateful for dear friends that shared this experience with me. Thank you Sarah F. and Nelda R for your obedience and worship!

Question: Are you too distracted to see God speaking in plain sight?

Are You Ready?

Matthew 24:42-44

“42 Therefore be alert, since you don’t know what day your Lord is coming. 43 But know this: If the homeowner had known what time the thief was coming, he would have stayed alert and not let his house be broken into. 44 This is why you also must be ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”

Are you ready

There is no time to delay! The time is now. Are you truly ready for the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ? I received a call this evening from a great friend today. This man sharpens me in many ways. You see, I know when I see his name on my caller identification that I am about to experience worship and deep spiritual sharpening; I am never disappointed. We discussed the meaning of Matthew 7:21-23 that says, 21 “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name?’ 23 Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!

Listen dear children. My soul is breaking for this very cause. I have spoken in the past and continue to feel a conviction to announce the truth! Where is your relationship with Christ? Both of these passages pierce the soul for urgency. First, we are to live each day in beautiful anticipation of our Lord coming back – riding on the clouds! We do not know the exact day or hour; therefore, we should remain alert and watchful.

Secondly, preaching, casting out demons, and calling on the name of the Lord alone is not necessarily declaration of salvation – let that sink in. Does that sting a little? I yearn for all of us to “get it” now before it’s too late! The Word makes it very clear that, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord!’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven.” The only way you can do the will of the Father is to KNOW HIM intimately! Memorizing Scripture, going to church, and reciting rote religious oaths are all “good things” but can all be accomplished without developing a relationship with Christ and without following His will. I implore you to search your soul as the Holy Spirit opens up the true meaning behind these passages. The purpose of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection was to restore a broken relationship! He expects a personal relationship as granted through His forgiveness, grace, and mercy.

My pastor often says, “We are closer to the second coming today than we were yesterday.” This statement not only makes me laugh but brings such reality to cognitive awareness. Yes indeed – we are closer today than we were yesterday; moreover, are you ready? I continue to feel an urgency in sharing the truth – the time is near. Let’s be a part of the awakening. What does this look like for you? First, it requires an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ – to know Him, to speak to Him, and to listen to Him daily. Once you experience this type of intimate relationship, then you will be charged to worship Him with complete surrender. Be filled this moment as He awaits your decision.

Question: Do you know Jesus intimately? Do you follow the Father’s will?

Power in Faith

Mark 9:14-29

“14 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.”

Help my unbelief

The disciples learned a very valuable lesson this day! What can we learn from this amazing story? As a father myself, there is nothing more debilitating than being unable to help your son. As the father of the boy with an evil spirit becomes increasingly weary and heartbroken over the condition of his own son, I believe he initially felt relief when he encountered the disciples. Upon his interaction, he might have thought, “I’ve finally found some help for my child!” One cannot truly fathom caring for a child who was being destroyed by this evil spirit – v22 “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him” – what helplessness consumed this family! Yet there’s hope on the horizon!

When Jesus came back to the disciples after his transfiguration, he encounters two distinct problems: (A) The disciples were unable to cast out this evil spirit and (B) the teachers of the law arguing with them. How did unbelief play a part in giving the devil a foothold in this situation? How does the lack of faith play a part in giving the devil a foothold in your life? Upon further questioning, Jesus learns that the disciples were unsuccessful in delivering this child from an evil spirit. Jesus expresses deep, yet righteous, disappointment over the lack of faith demonstrated by His chosen followers and stated in v19, “O unbelieving generation…how long shall I put up with you?” As the child was brought before Jesus, the spirit immediately threw the boy into a convulsion – stop, mediate on this verse, and be in awe! The evil spirit was not confused! This spirit knew exactly who was standing before him. More importantly, the evil spirit knew his time was short! – PRAISE GOD! The convulsions and distractions did not deter Jesus, He commanded the evil spirit to leave the boy and to never return! Yes and Amen! The boy was restored! What does restoration look like in your life? God intends for you to live free from such burdens, evil spirits, fear, guilt, and shame. These are not from our heavenly Father.

Let us not forget two very important pieces within this story. The boy’s father verbalized his unbelief when he stated, “But if you can do anything…” Jesus responds with a powerful, “If you can? said Jesus. Everything is possible for him who believes.” My dear brothers and sisters, do you struggle with unbelief like this boy’s father? We must believe and have faith that this very promise is true as God is incapable of lying. Rebuke the lies of the devil and claim this victory and promise for your own life! Just as the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief,” we must pray the same!

The second important factor involved the unsuccessful deliverance conducted by the disciples. The disciples did ask Jesus why they were unable to drive out this evil spirit, and Jesus states very clearly in v29 “This kind can come out only by prayer.” We must remember that casting out evil spirits is more than a proclamation we verbalize in the name of Jesus. I believe this was a humbling experience for the disciples. Maybe we get “too comfortable” and “too confident” within our own abilities and then the words lose their power because this power granted by Jesus Christ alone is mixed with our selfishness. These two cannot coexists! Selfishness will never equate to spiritual power! It’s like oil and water – it won’t mix! Christ’s power rests on HIM ALONE! Once we taint it with selfishness, pride, and lack of faith, then we place faulty human traits on a powerful God – Let’s not do that my brothers and sisters. When we fail to acknowledge through prayer and fasting the origin of our God-given power, then we have closed our spiritual eyes. We then open gates for pride, selfishness, envy, and anger as we close the door on God’s anointing. The words, “In Jesus’ name” carry great power and authority to believers – those that crucify the flesh daily. Let us learn from our brothers that walked with Jesus. Let us not become prideful and remain humble in spirit.

Question: Is unbelief keeping you from experiencing fullness in Christ and His power?

Yearning for God

Psalm 42:1-2

“As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?”

Deer Pants for Water

Have you truly experienced thirst? – Not just the act of being thirsty. Have you truly experienced a thirst for either physical water or for something else? Personally, I have longed for water when training for marathons and wondering if I would be overcome with dehydration or fatigue; yet, have I ever come face-to-face with extreme thirst to where my life depended upon it? I would venture to say no! I have also demonstrated a thirst in reaching goals in my life especially in the realm of achieving professional degrees and stretching myself in clinical management. However, what about spiritually? What does this look like for you in your spiritual life? I am sure we could all easily give examples of longing for worldly goals but what about spiritual ones?

The Psalmist paints a very beautiful yet somewhat heartbroken picture in these verses and chapter. The Psalmist apparently was exiled among Gentiles who persecuted him for his faith (v3…”while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?”) Even more, the Psalmist longed to participate in the pilgrim to Jerusalem where it was time for a festival, just like the ones he used to lead himself as a worship leader; however, he could not go and was heartbroken. This physical separation brings about this very personal Psalm, and we can learn greatly from such insight.

We must all come to this place – the place where life begins when we are WITH God! The Psalmist was reminded of a deer panting and longing for water as one would do during a draught – true despair! The Psalmist knew he could not live a fulfilled life without the one and true God. He longed – thirsted – to go to the temple on this pilgrimage to be with his God in order to be filled! This physical separation resulted in a “spiritual draught” for this writer. He had physical food, shelter, and water. However, only the true experience of being with God could fulfill his needs. Can you say the same?

My dear brothers and sisters – your pilgrimage is here! Your pilgrimage starts NOW! For those who trust in His Son, Jesus Christ, we are no longer separated by a veil. He is not just in the Holy of Holies deep within the temple walls. The God of creation resides within us through the Holy Spirit. I am afraid, however, that many Christian are numb to this power. The same God that the Psalmist thirsted for thousands of years ago is the same God that lives in you and me!

Where is your zeal? Where is your passion dear believer? The same God that the Psalmist cried out in heartache as he could not participate in the pilgrimage back to Jerusalem is the same God who is speaking life to you inside your body, His temple, today! 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says,”19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

As you meditate on this passage, ask God freely to develop a thirst within you that can only be quenched by the fulfillment of the Holy Spirit. What is keeping you from starting your pilgrimage today? Praise God that He has provided a way through His Son Jesus Christ to experience this type of longing – thirst – through prayer, Bible study, and listening because He lives in YOU so go ahead and thirst!

Question: What is keeping you from experiencing this type of spiritual thirst?

Trials

James 1:2-8

“2 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”

Count it all joy

Last fall, I was fortunate enough to spend several days serving at a Faith Walk South Louisiana weekend where we dug deep into this passage. That weekend and this passage will forever hold a special place in my heart. If you are not familiar with Faith Walk or other Christian renewal weekends, I earnestly ask that you look into these and sign up to experience a closer walk with Jesus. As you prayerfully meditate on this passage today, ask God to unveil your eyes; open your heart; and speak truth into your life.

James uses an interesting conjunction word at the very beginning of this passage – WHEN. The Word of God makes it very clear that we WILL encounter various trials – not if, but when – so we must prepare now! Your Christian maturity plays a major part in (A) how you see your trials as pure joy and (B) how you learn to develop deeper faith, patience, and perseverance.

As believers, we know that God works all things for our good: “28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Believers must not live in a false reality that Christians are exempt from all trials while on this earth. The challenge is developing the Christ-like attributes during these trials that increase spiritual maturity so that you may be used to further God’s kingdom…remember, it’s really not about you!

Focus your attention on God and not your problem and He will not only protect you but He will TEACH YOU! We must remember that God allows testing to strengthen; God is not capable of tempting; it is not in His character -It’s IMPOSSIBLE! James 1:13 states, “No one undergoing a trial should say, “I am being tempted by God.” For God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself doesn’t tempt anyone.”

We must remember that we are living in a fallen world. Most of our trials are merely because we are human but some trials originate from persecution because we are Christians. Either circumstance, we can rely on God’s grace and omnipotence to teach us and also to shelter us when needed. I wonder, though, how many of us just pray to be released from our trials? Instead, let’s heed the principles in this passage and pray for wisdom. Through wisdom, we gain a deeper spiritual understanding at the hand’s of God and not of ourselves. We become focused on seeking God’s purpose and plan through the trial versus selfishly and pridefully “powering” through on our own. I pray that we seek a spiritual understanding of, “I don’t want to miss the lesson,” when undergoing life’s circumstances and trials. Then, and only then, can we count it all joy!

Praise God for His lessons even in the storms!

Question: How do you pray when you are in the storms of life? How important is seeking wisdom during trials to a believer?

Friendship

Proverbs 17:17

“17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”

Friendship

A special blessing that God has bestowed upon us is the gift of friendship here on earth. This verse clearly states that friendship is based on love. From the bottom of my heart, I am beyond thankful for my dearest friends; those that share every aspect of my life – my inner circle. This type of “life-sharing” does not happen over night.

True, biblical, friendship requires love, trust, devotion, and time. It is more important to cultivate these types of deep relationships versus seeking only “surface friends” – those that you allow just below your emotional mantle – safe space – while preventing them from entering past your iron wall where you guard your deepest emotional substrate. Proverbs continues to reinforce this in 18:24, “A man with many friends may be harmed, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.”

True friends are not only loving, they are also deeply loyal. My family is currently experiencing this type of deep loyalty while my son is recuperating from surgery. We are blessed with Christian parents, siblings, and extended family that sacrifice daily for our family. However, God showered great blessings upon our family through the gifts of our dearest friends. Friends that die to self and demonstrate such sacrifice at the right time – blessed!

My prayer is that you seek friendships that are God-honoring, loving, and loyal. Proverbs 27:17 states, “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.” My life is forever enriched, challenged, strengthened, and protected by my accountability partner and friend. Accountability partners are a special group of deep-rooted friends. These appointees are God’s gift to human relationships. These special friends are carefully woven into all parts of your life where God is allowed to breathe His perfect richness into your life in the way of refinement, edification, reward, correction, and discernment. I do not take this relationship for granted, and I thank God daily for the gift of friendship and my accountability partner.

Question: Do you have deep-rooted friends or only surface-friendships? Are your friends God-honoring? Proverbs 12:26 states, “The righteous should choose his friends carefully, for the way of the wicked leads them astray.” Pray earnestly for deep-rooted, biblical, friendships that reflect God’s glory!

Trust

Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding;  think about Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.

trust in the lord

As humans, we wrestle God with the very gift He has given us – cognitive reasoning and problem solving. This higher-level cognitive process tries to tell us that we know best; however, this is a lie. We are part of His creation and under His authority and ruling.

During my reading and digging today, I learned that the word “trust” in this verse means “to lie helpless, facedown.” Just sit back and think about that for a moment. Let that wash over you if you will! Have you ever placed a visual to this verse? Have you ever visualized yourself lying facedown before Holy God waiting for His commands? This picture clearly represents a servant’s heart.

Let us all seek this type of commitment and obedience to God. I pray that in all things we will trust in Him by surrendering our control! Don’t give in to the “powers” of your mind-you will fail! God will guide you on the right paths if you would would surrender all! Amen!

Love Your Enemies

Luke 6:27-31

27 “But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If anyone hits you on the cheek, offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don’t hold back your shirt either. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and from one who takes your things, don’t ask for them back. 31 Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.”

love enemies

Character! Integrity! Christ-Like Behavior! Christians cannot help but see the character of Christ in this passage. These principles go against everything the world teaches and reinforces. Just turn on the news, scroll through any web search engine, flip through the pages of your local newspaper…what do you see? Headings that may look something like, “The Latest News on the London Bombings,” “Attack on Christianity in America,” “The Latest Road Rage Incident Caught on Camera,” “Teenager Bullied for Years Ends His Life,” “Hate Crimes Increasing in Our Communities Across the Nation.” Dear friends, we are surrounded by hate and retaliation. The root – SIN! Jesus demonstrated a different way, and He has called all followers to align with His principles equaling love, mercy, grace, patience, kindness, forgiveness, generosity, hope, and faith.

We have heard the phrase, “Hatred breeds hatred!” Christ teaches that love, even for those who hate us, shows the character of Christ which brings God glory. We are here to serve God almighty in whatever capacity prescribed. When faced with difficult situations such as persecution, hate, and abuse, we are always charged to emulate the actions and words of Christ – LOVE! We were taught even as little children that we must, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” This golden rule is a fundamental Christian principle.

Sadly, even Christians spew hate to their fellow believers and non-believers alike. Luke reminds us further in this chapter that we also reap what we sow. If we are unforgiving, judgmental, and hateful to those around us: peers, strangers, believers, non-believers, etc., then the Word makes it very clear that we open ourselves up to judgement ourselves. Not only do we smear the name of Jesus, we ruin our witness and invite torment.

Question: Do you identify with Christ’s principles on love and forgiveness even to those who hate and curse you? Do you find that your character and flesh identify with the world and you often engage in retaliation and spew hatred? Ask God the cleanse you from your sins and serve Him with gladness.

Thankful,
